stop the quarry

... AND AGAIN REJECTED

The good news is that the second application has been rejected. Another victory for common sense and democracy.

Brett have now withdrawn their appeal on the first application, and arrangements for that appeal have been cancelled and the file closed. However, they say they are keeping their options open on the second appeal, and have until May to make a decision.

CHILTON QUARRY AGAIN REJECTED

At 9.30am on 1 December, a convoy of more than ninety vehicles proceeded with a police escort from Newton Village Hall towards Sudbury on the A134 to demonstrate once again strong local opposition against the proposed quarry at Chilton.  Protestors came from Chilton, Sudbury, Great Waldingfield, Newton, Great Cornard and further afield.

The convoy passed the quarry site twice on their journey to Sudbury and back and demonstrators at the site itself wore masks and skeleton outfits to illustrate the dangerous nature of the proposed quarry exit.

To further illustrate the point, early in the morning demonstrators had marked out the site and date of everyone of the more than 25 accidents (including three fatalities) along this short stretch of road over the last six years.  It was very clear from this visual illustration that most of the accidents are clustered around junctions and in particular around the proposed quarry exit and Wyevale Garden Centre.

The protestors, together with their County Councillors, took their case to Suffolk Council Council's Development Committee on the morning of Thursday December 4th, where the application for a quarry from Brett Aggregate was once again rejected.

In January we will prepare to take on Brett again over the appeal on the first application on February 10th, and on March 17th the same government inspector starts an enquiry to all the proposed mineral sites in Suffolk.  We hope to get Chilton removed from that list.

FIGHT THE QUARRY!

Protest planned [PDF]

  • One quarry near Wyevale Garden Centre means 20,228 extra vehicle movements a year…
  • How will this affect you..?

  • 7,079 extra vehicle movements a year towards Sudbury and Melford (including 2 extra every working day through Ballingdon) …
  • 13,148 extra vehicle movements a year through Newton Green and towards all the villages through to Ipswich and Colchester …
  • Most of these vehicles will be 20 tonne lorries or larger!

Brett Aggregate are proposing to build a quarry on Suffolk County Council land near Wyevale Garden Centre on the A134 just on the outskirts of Sudbury. If allowed to go ahead, this development will affect everyone who uses the road from Sudbury to Ipswich or Colchester and those who live in Sudbury and the surrounding villages. The Police are opposed to this proposal having described the stretch of road (currently over 1,000 vehicles an hour in peak periods) as “nearing accident black spot status”. We have had this planning application rejected once – please help us do it again by sending your objections to:

Mr. Terry Burns, Scrutiny and Monitoring Development Section, Suffolk County Council, Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 2BX.

Ref: B/08/1182/CMA Proposed Quarry, Chilton Estate.

LETTERS OF OBJECTION WILL HAVE TO BE COUNTED RIGHT UP UNTIL THE EXPECTED DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING ON DECEMBER 4TH.

You can also send your letters by email to terry.burns@et.suffolkcc.gov.uk.

Letters do not need to be long, you can object on the grounds of road safety and the environment, but please do object.
